Devising a Mystery Story

Eduardo Suré; Knife, 2017; Watercolor on Paper

I painted this image while thinking up a mystery story. One of the challenges I face when I’m thinking up stories for my kids is making sure the content is appropriate. Murder, robbery, aggravated assault, kidnapping, drugs, and other awful things – those are the things the news, movies, and books bombard me with. Those are the offenses that come to my mind first. When I wrote the crime story, I made a list of illegal activities. From that list; burglary, larceny, and vandalism seemed not-so-bad and not-so-boring for a short story. I think my options are the same for this week’s mystery story.
